Landry Fields and Jeremy Lin’s new handshake: skimming through book, taking off glasses, then placing inside pocket protector.
Note: Landry Fields graduated from Stanford, Lin from Harvard. Way to set the bar super high for all Asian parents, Jeremy.

First off, I want to say congratulations to Japan. I’m truly happy for that team, and it was a great win for them. Sawa’s goal was stunning, and I’m glad that their squad will get recognition. Even though we lost, and even though it hurts, I’m so proud of our girls. Alex- ahhh, Alex! I just.. I can’t even say how happy I am for her. Some people only pay attention to her and the team because of her looks, but she is so much more than a pretty face to me. This girl didn’t start playing at club level until she was 14 years old, and now, she’s the youngest member of the USWNT. At 14, most people would tell you that it’s too late to make anything happen, but look at her now. She makes things happen. She earned herself a scholarship to Berkeley. She scored the winning goal in the U-20 WWC. She led Berkeley’s soccer team in scoring each year she was there. She was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy. She scored the goal that qualified the U.S. for the 2011 WWC. She sealed the deal with a goal in the WC game against France. She scored the opening goal in the WC final, and then assisted Abby’s header. In her very first WC, she helped her team reach second place. She may not have that gold medal around her neck, but to me, she is truly a champion, and the epitome of natural talent. She has inspired me to possibly take up soccer again, and I am so so so thankful for that, because part of my happiness will be restored.
This has been the best WC I’ve ever watched, and I’m really grateful for our team. They’re still the best in my eyes, and I love them with everything that I have. Despite all the sexism and discrimination that they have to face, they still manage to come out on top, and they’re still triumphant. Men and women can learn so much from this them, and as time goes on, I know that things will get easier, and people will respect them more. I hope that all of you will continue to support Alex as she plays in the WPS with the Flash. She really is a star on the rise, and I can’t wait to see what she’ll do next.
Excuse this novel! I’ll be posting gifs and pictures later on… I’m still kind of in a funk right now :/
I totally agree about all those sexist remarks, too. Really annoying.
Oh, fuck it.
LET’S GET MARRIED, ALEX MORGAN, AND MAKE BEAUTIFUL, SOCCER-PLAYING BABIES TOGETHER.
These days I’m not the biggest baseball fan (my hometown Astros have kinda ruined it for me), but as a sports fan, walking by this today was a pretty awesome moment.

Derrick Rose: Monster on Madison Street
Full disclosure: I am an unrelenting Bulls fanatic. I had already begun editing this video before I was asked by the rest of the NBAO crew to compile some sort of Derrick Rose tribute. And so, operating under the assumption that all of you have checked out GQ’s fancy NBA guide, seeing the headline “The Case Against Derrick Rose” nestled right next to “Thirty Minutes with Walt Frazier” was personally jarring — and the fact that it was penned (er, typed?) by none other than my favorite basketball scribe, Bethlehem Shoals, made it especially so. Quoi? There’s a case against the Great Poohdini? THIS CANNOT STAND:
Rose fills most people with awe, if not joy that once upon a time, James Naismith invented the sport of basketball so that one day he might play it. Me, I watch him and I’m consumed with little more than frustration and dread.
…
Rose gets plenty of assists, but he always seems to look for his shot first; when he gives the ball up, especially if it’s as any part of set play, he comes off as rote, resigned. When he kicks the ball out to an open man, it’s in the moment, a safety valve rather than a systemic ploy.
Oh man. Of course, who could predict that the Twitter went aflame? After enduring what apparently was much abuse, Shoals ultimately tweeted this: “In final analysis, liking some good players more than others is kind of at the root of “sports criticism”.” Which, yes. It’s true. I myself hate Kevin Garnett. But D. Rose? How? The weight of the piece rests on Shoals’ belief that #1 is a touch overrated. That he COULD be the best, but is relying on brute athleticism and limited on-court smarts to make his statement. And for now, it’s working.
But — and it took me awhile to arrive at this line of thinking — I can see where Shoals is coming from. I’m just not mad about it anymore. All he means is that Derrick has room for improvement, not that all the attention surrounding him has been totally unwarranted.
And this is not an insurmountable task. Just ask the city of Chicago.
So, with that, enjoy this video homage to Chitown’s own NBA East All-Star starter.

This is an awesome video. D. Rose is one nasty mofo. Bet he doesn’t use mouthwash OR courtesy flush.
Can’t wait to get to Chicago and see him play in person.
